Kingsport: Newsletter Art

I am still working on the Altrusa Records for the Kingsport Archives. The files are processed now and I have gone back to doing some conservation work on the scrapbooks. In the mean time, I am absolutely thrilled to share with you the best thing about this collection. During the 1960’s the organization’s newsletters had hand drawn headers. The editor at the time was Alice W. Blankenship, a powerhouse of community involvement, but sadly I do not know if she was the artist. Below are my favorites. Enjoy.

I love the recurring themes of the tree stump and ax, and the dog. I love how the farm changed slightly through the years. Most of all, I love how these newsletters are evidence of a simpler, slower time with less technology and more personal touches.
